The West Tennessee Youth Chorus
was founded in 1996 by
director Martha Wright as
an educational program for vocally
and musically gifted children to develop their talents. The
after-school music program, ages 9-15, which also includes a
training chorus, the West Tennessee Children’s Chorus,
rehearses two days a week in Cordova, Tennessee, USA. Students
look forward at age 12 to advancing to the WTYC. This touring
chorus in a short amount of time, has become recognized as one
of the premier children’s music organizations.
The WTCC/WTYC program was founded with
six areas of focus, proper vocal technique for the age
level, sight-singing, ear-training, part-singing,
educational performances and tours,
and service. Martha Wright’s philosophy to 'teach

and great performances will come' as well as her
goal-setting for the organization has paid off in the short amount of time the music school has been in existence.
In the 1997, the WTYC performed for an estimated audience of 15,000 for the National Kiwanis Convention held in Nashville, TN. In 1998 they toured Austria and Germany after a
year of study of composers and culture, to set a trend of educational touring
every two years.

The year 2000 was a monumental year of
growth for the WTCC/WTYC. After completing their first compact
disc, they submitted it to the National Pageant of Peace, Presidential Christmas Tree
Lighting committee. WTYC was selected that December to open
the nationally televised event, and was elated to perform with
young Welsh soprano idol,
Charlotte Church and Country stars
Billy Gilman and Kathy Mattea. Sharing the stage with President
and Mrs. Clinton, Al Roker, and
Thomas Kinkade - Painter of
Light was a thrilling experience for the children of the
WTYC. |
